GPT-6 reaches free ChatGPT, Gemini free drops to Flash-Lite: which free AI to use for work now

This week ChatGPT Free and Go got GPT-6 Luna, Claude Free got Haiku 5.5, and free Gemini lost Flash and Pro. What changed, what we don't know, and which to use.

In one week, all three big free AI chatbots changed. ChatGPT’s free plan got GPT-6, Claude’s free plan got a new fast model, and Gemini’s free plan got smaller. If you use free AI for work, here is what actually changed.

Many Pakistani students, freelancers and office workers use the free versions of ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini every day. Between 7 and 9 October 2026, the companies behind all three changed what free users get. Here is each change, with its source, what is still unclear, and a simple way to decide what to use.

The three changes at a glance

1. ChatGPT: GPT-6 Luna for Free and Go

According to OpenAI’s announcement on 7 October, GPT-6 with a feature called Intelligent UI started rolling out to Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise that day, and “starting tomorrow, the rollout expands to Free and Go tiers.” OpenAI says paid plans get GPT-6 Sol, while Free and Go get GPT-6 Luna, and that “both are tuned for everyday conversation.”

What is new, per OpenAI:

  • Intelligent UI. Answers can now include charts, diagrams, buttons, forms and small working tools (OpenAI’s examples include a savings calculator and a bill splitter) inside the chat. ChatGPT decides the format itself; you don’t need a special prompt.
  • Answers start sooner. OpenAI says GPT-6 can begin answering while it is still thinking, and that for questions needing web search, GPT-6 Instant starts answering 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant. That is OpenAI’s own internal measurement.

Practical details from OpenAI’s help page and Notebookcheck:

  • Older desktop apps don’t show Intelligent UI. OpenAI’s help page says the older ChatGPT desktop apps for Windows and macOS don’t support it and recommends the web version. On phones, update the app.
  • No extra quota. Intelligent UI has no separate usage limit; your plan’s normal limits apply.
  • Prefer plain text? On the web, go to Settings and turn off Layout and visuals. OpenAI says some visual elements may still appear.

What we don’t know yet

  • Exactly when your account gets it. The rollout is global and staged. OpenAI’s help page says: “If you don’t see GPT-6 in the model menu, it may not be available for your account yet.”
  • OpenAI’s own pages don’t fully agree. When we checked the help page on 9 October, it still described GPT-5.6 Luna as the default for Free and Go, while the 7 October announcement names GPT-6 Luna. Notebookcheck pointed out the same mismatch. So if your free account still shows the older model, that matches what OpenAI’s help page says today.

What about ChatGPT Go in Pakistan?

Go is OpenAI’s low-cost paid plan. When it launched in Pakistan in October 2025, TechJuice reported a price of Rs 1,400 a month, billed in PKR. Prices can change, so check the price shown in the app before you subscribe. Per OpenAI, Go gets the same GPT-6 Luna as the free plan in Chat. According to TechJuice’s launch report, what Go adds is more image generation, file uploads, data analysis and higher usage limits, not a stronger chat model.

2. Claude: Haiku 5.5 on the free plan

Anthropic released Claude Haiku 5.5 on 7 October and calls it “the cheapest, fastest, and most capable small model we’ve ever released.” On its Haiku page, Anthropic says “Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise users can select Haiku 5.5 on Claude.ai”, on web, iOS and Android. Pakistan is on Anthropic’s list of supported countries.

Anthropic positions Haiku 5.5 for quick, repetitive work: summaries, classification, customer replies and simple coding. It says larger models (Sonnet 5.5, Opus 5.5) remain better for complex work. Anthropic’s launch post also includes benchmark comparisons against GPT-6 Luna; those are the company’s own tests, so treat them as claims, not independent results.

If you build things with AI, we have a separate breakdown of what Claude Haiku 5.5 costs on the API and what you can build with it.

3. Gemini: free plan limited to Flash-Lite

According to 9to5Google, which cites Google’s updated support document, from 9 October Gemini users without a Google AI subscription can only use Flash-Lite, Google’s most cost-effective model. Flash and Pro are no longer available to them. Engadget reported the same change.

Paid plans, per the same reports:

AI PlusYesYesNo
AI ProYesYesYes
AI UltraYesYesYes

The US prices in these reports (for example $19.99 a month for AI Pro, per 9to5Google) are not Pakistan prices. Check what your Google account shows in Pakistan before paying.

Why this matters in Pakistan

  • Free AI is how most people here start. For a student in Multan or a freelancer in Peshawar, a paid plan in dollars is a real cost. This week, the free versions of ChatGPT and Claude got newer models, while free Gemini got a smaller one.
  • Your workflow may have changed without you noticing. If you used free Gemini Pro for long documents or coding help, that option is gone on the free plan from 9 October. Re-test your usual tasks before a client deadline, not during one.
  • Interactive answers still need checking. A calculator or chart that ChatGPT builds in the chat can look official. If you send its numbers to a client or your boss, check the maths yourself first.

Kaam ki baat: which free AI for which job

There is no single best free AI now. Try your own real task in each one, and keep using whichever gives you the most accurate answer.

  1. Run one real task three ways. Take a task you do every week (a client email, a report summary, an Excel formula) and try it in ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. Keep the one that gets it right with the fewest edits.
  2. Long documents: test Claude and ChatGPT first now that free Gemini is limited to Flash-Lite.
  3. Quick visual explanations: try ChatGPT on the web, where Intelligent UI works, not the old desktop app.
  4. Don’t paste private data. CNICs, bank details, client contracts and passwords don’t belong in any free chatbot. See our guide on using AI for your CV without leaking personal data.
  5. Check the model name. Look at the model menu before relying on an answer. If it still says GPT-5.6 Luna, the rollout hasn’t reached you yet.

FAQ

Is GPT-6 really free?

OpenAI says GPT-6 Luna started rolling out to Free and Go users on 8 October. Paid plans get GPT-6 Sol. Both are called GPT-6, but they are different models.

I don’t see GPT-6. Is my account broken?

Probably not. OpenAI says the rollout is staged and that GPT-6 “may not be available for your account yet”. If you use the old desktop app, try the web version.

Can I still use Gemini Pro for free?

According to 9to5Google and Engadget, no. From 9 October, free Gemini users only get Flash-Lite.
